CALL-FOR-PAPERS

Movement and Dance in Global Perspective
An International Conference

July 24-26th, 2008
Zhuhai, Guangdong Province
People's Republic of China

Sponsored by
Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University
United International College
in association with
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

An interdisciplinary conference celebrating the pioneering work of Dr. Drid Williams

Call for Papers.

We invite submissions for this international, interdisciplinary conference to be hosted on the beautiful campus of United International College in Zhuhai, on the shores of the South China Sea in HuangDong province, China, with easy access to Hong Kong International airport. This is the first international movement and dance conference to be jointly sponsored by a Chinese and an American University. It will facilitate a stimulating intercultural exchange of ideas and advance research on a broad range of movement practices across the globe. All sessions will be simultaneously translated into Chinese and English, the working languages for the conference.

During this first decade of the 21st century, at a time of intensified circulation of movement and dance forms worldwide, and with new digital technologies for representing the body in motion, how can we best attend to critical inquiry? How do Asian and Pacific approaches differ from those of Western disciplines and inter-disciplines in understanding bodily practices as diverse as, dance/music, ceremony, ritual, sports, martial arts, gestural systems, sign languages and other systems of skilled action? How do theoretical approaches such as semiotics, cultural studies, performance studies and phenomenology assist in understanding corporeal knowledge? How might the perspectives afforded by studies of gender, colonization, and globalization help to elucidate their meanings? Proposals on all areas of movement and dance research are encouraged.

The committee will accept proposals written in either Chinese or English. Submission guidelines and forms are attached.
