CALL-FOR-PAPERS

AAA SAN FRANCISCO 2008

Initial Call for Papers

Dear fellow SVA members,

As your SVA Program Committee for the 2008 AAA meeting in San Francisco, we would like to invite the development of ideas for papers, posters, panels, and workshops to be reviewed or sponsored by the SVA. The theme for next year's meeting is "Inclusion, Collaboration, and Engagement", to which the SVA should be able to make a significant contribution. This is a good opportunity for SVA to bring our work to the general AAA membership and to forcefully argue its place in the field as a whole.

In particular, we would like to invite the development of Presidential Sessions or Presidential High Tables (see descriptions below). You must submit a session abstract and confirmed list of participants to us by the JANUARY 7th deadline.

Please feel free to contact either of us as you develop ideas for Presidential Sessions, Invited Sessions, Regular Scientific Sessions, Special Events, and Workshops as we plan the 2008 SVA program.

Kate Hennessy (hennessy@interchange.ubc.ca) and Aaron Glass (ajglass@interchange.ubc.ca) SVA Program Committee.

AAA Sessions- what are they?

Presidential Sessions: like regular "invited" paper panels ("scientific sessions"), but approved by the President and Executive Program chairs, usually directly tied to the year's theme, automatically accepted, and listed in the program under "Presidential Invited Sessions" [requires complete proposal submission by the section chairs to SVA by January 7th, and by SVA to the Executive Committee by Jan.14th].

Presidential High Tables: one special invited speaker gives a short presentation on a certain topic usually directly tied to the year's theme; a few invited panel speakers make short responses; then the audience divides up into small groups and each discusses the issues with one of the panelists. These are also approved by the Presidential and Executive program chair, automatically accepted, and listed in the program under "Presidential Invited Sessions" [requires complete proposal submission by the section chairs to SVA by January 7th, and by SVA to the Executive Committee by Jan.14th].

Invited Sessions: regular paper panels ("scientific sessions") that are typically submitted complete to the sections early for consideration for "Invited" status. If granted, they are automatically accepted and scheduled first (often in better time slots). Each section is allotted a number of "invited" sessions according to their membership numbers. [Get complete proposals to program committee asap (by Feb or March), but submit/register with AAA by April 1].

Roundtable Sessions: invited sessions that are expected to have more discussion than regular scientific sessions. The formats are flexible, but should be 1 _ hours in length. [Get complete proposals to program committee asap (by Feb or March), but submit/register with AAA by April 1]

Scientific Sessions: regular paper panels submitted either as complete sessions or as individual papers to specific sections for review. Individual submissions, if accepted, are then organized into thematic sessions by the section's program committee. Submit/register with AAA by April 1.

Special Events: Any non-standard panel, roundtable, discussion, board/business meeting, etc. This is the space for alternative formats. They take place at non-scientific session times (typically at lunch or dinner time, or before or after the main meeting days). [Discuss with SVA program committee first, but submit to AAA by April 1)

Poster Sessions: Visual presentations of the results of recent field or research project. These sessions provide a more intimate forum for exchange than do regular paper presentations by facilitating informal discussions between presenters and viewers. Poster Sessions can be organized thematically and submitted to the SVA program committee as a complete session for review, or can be submitted as individual posters that will then be grouped together by the program committee. [Submit/register with AAA by April 1.

Workshops: Skill-building workshops led by individuals to raise funds for the sections. Fees, lengths (2 or 3 hours) and time slots vary. [Discuss with section program committee first, but register with a separate form directly with AAA by April 7.
