CVA Call For PPAPERS and FILMS 18th ICAES congress in Kunming, China 15-23 July 2008 |
||||||||||||||||||||||
I would like to invite all of you to attend this meeting, thus making it a special congress with many anthropological films as well as a number of sessions concerning visual studies.
If you have tried to register directly on the ICAES website, you may have come across similar problems as I have found when I wanted to submit a paper on visual anthropology as well as a documentary film, and register as an attendant. There seem to be technical problems with that website, but there is hope that they may be overcome! Fortunately I had the pleasure of a two-day visit here in Göttingen of Prof. Zhuang Kongshao and his colleague Zhang Youchun, both responsible for visual studies and the organisation of the film festival at ICAES. Together with Metje Postma, my nominated successor as CVA chair person from next year, the four of us discussed all details about ICAES and visual studies/film festival matters and agreed that all necessary information should be published here in this very newsletter.
We also agreed that the registration procedures on the ICAES urgently need improvement. Prof. Zhuang Kongshao will see to it that by mid-December two shortcomings of the current ICAES website will be abolished: 1) A “Call for papers and films” for the general CVA session “The Visual in Anthropology”– similar to my one published in this newsletter twice before – will be added to the ICAES website, and 2) a full list of (some 10) sessions related to Visual Anthropology (in addition to the general CVA session) will be put on the website, and will also appear on the IUAES website under CVA activities. Furthermore he will try to have the technical problems solved which make registration so far difficult.
So, for more information about visual anthropology sessions other than the general CVA session, please have a look at those two websites.
Here then is the CVA Call for papers and films
CALL FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMS (to be screened at the Film Festival during ICAES)
Prof. Zhuang Kongshao and Zhang Youchun invite submissions of documentary ethnographic films. Deadline for submission is 31 January 2008. All previews (preferably on DVD) should be sent by ordinary mail until that deadline to:
Zhang Youchun Institute of Anthropology School of Sociology and Population Studies Renmin University of China Beijing 100872 P.R. China
(Please do NOT send films to CVA, i.e. Rolf Husmann!!)
There are no fees or other costs for film submissions!! The selection of the film programme will be made until early april 2008 and then communicated to all submitters. If then directors/producers/anthropologist-filmmakers of selected films wish to participate in the congress and thus be present at the screening of their film, they need to register as congress participants.
The Film Festival Programme will be supplemented by some 10 films of a “Travelling Festival” of CAFFE (Coordinating of Anthropological Film Festivals in Europe), representing films from European anthropological festivals held in the spring of 2008.
CALL FOR PAPERS IN VISUAL STUDIES (to be presented in the general session on Visual Anthropology organised by CVA and chaired by Rolf Husmann and Metje Postma)
There will be two full days for this session. Each presentation will be up to 30 minutes presentation time plus 15 minutes discussion. Film excerpts can be included. Papers should be submitted until 31 January, 2008 to:
Rolf Husmann, via e-mail: rolf.husmann@iwf.de, and, if technically possible, as a copy to ICAES.
After submission, a confirmation of the submitted paper will be mailed. In February 2008, the final programme for this session will be communicated by Rolf Husmann, and selected presenters need to register for the congress as participants.
It is intended to include in this general session a SPECIAL PART IN HONOUR OF ASEN BALIKCI. Papers which would fit this part of the session are therefore especially welcome!! At its end the CVA business meeting will take place, during which the official handing over of the CVA chairpersonship from Rolf Husmann to Metje Postma will take place, and future cooperating members should be elected.
Additional information: As mentioned above, there will be some 10 other sessions with a Visual Anthropology topic. Please find out about them by looking at the IUAES/CVA website (from mid-December). If you wish to submit a paper to one of these panels, please contact the respective session organisers.
If there are any further questions about ICAES and its Visual Anthropology sessions, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail to me or to Prof. Zhuang Kongshao: anthropology@126.com
I hope to see many of you in Kunming in July.
Yours Rolf Husmann CVA Chair |
