GRINNELL COLLEGE – FILM HISTORY AND THEORY – TENURE-TRACK POSITION
GRINNELL COLLEGE. The Humanities Division is seeking applications from scholars of the cinematic arts for a tenure-track position, starting Fall 2008. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. Candidates must provide evidence of demonstrated excellence and a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity in their teaching and research. The ideal candidate will be a scholar of film theory and history who can contribute to interdisciplinary inquiries into comparative film studies, visual culture, visual ethnography, cultural studies, aesthetics, art history, film and gender studies, film and literature, or another field that incorporates the study of visuality in an interdisciplinary way into the humanities. Candidates should also be able to teach courses in a discipline such as – but not limited to – Art, Chinese, English, German, Russian, or another national literature or comparative literature. The teaching schedule is five courses over two semesters; every few years one course will be Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic).
In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts environment that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. Candidates should also address how they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college that supports humanistic teaching and research through a wide range of Humanities Departments and a Center for the Humanities. The College’s curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major.
