Position: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position in Visual Anthropology

Effective Date: August 25, 2008

Job Description:

The Department of Anthropology at California State University, Long Beach, invites applications for a full- time, tenure track position in Visual Anthropology. The department seeks an anthropologist whose research and teaching agendas employ visual methods and theories. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research and teaching explore the intersection of visual techniques with traditional text- based ethnographic research, and whose topical interests may include one of the following areas: the role

of media technologies in community-based activism; environmental anthropology; applied anthropology; medical anthropology; or education. Geographic area of specialization is open. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

 

This hire will help solidify visual anthropology as an emphasis in departmental research and teaching. As a result, the successful applicant will be called on to create courses designed to train students in visual methods and theories related to ethnographic film, still photography, and/or multimedia ethnography.

 

Applicants should be prepared to teach not only the theoretical aspects of visual anthropology, but should also be capable of training undergraduate and graduate students to be technically proficient in the use of digital imaging and video technology, and basic documentary filmmaking.

 

Several departmental faculty currently employ visual methodologies and theories in their work. Field schools are an active and integral part of the departmentís teaching mission, and they are one of the primary means by which students and faculty have been able to undertake collaborative visual research. Therefore, candidates who can successfully involve students in fieldwork projects are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will also be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cultural

anthropology ñ such as Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Global Ethnography, Foundations of Anthropology, and Ethnographic Research Methods.

Minimum Qualifications:

●Ph.D. by the time of appointment in Anthropology, or in a closely related field.

●Specialization in Visual Anthropology, with experience in Ethnographic Film, Video or Still Photography.

●Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching at the university/college level, in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

●Evidence of, or potential for, an ongoing record of scholarly research and publication, commensurate with professional level.

●Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

 

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

● Demonstrated excellence in ñ or potential for ñ teaching at the university/college level

● Ability to propose, develop and effectively teach courses related to ethnographic film, visual research methods, as well as pre-production, production, and post-production techniques

● A demonstrated record of conducting ethnographic research employing visual methods and theories

● Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

 

Duties:

●Teach 3-4 courses per semester, from undergraduate to graduate (M.A.) in Anthropology, as well as other courses dependent upon the departmentís requirements and candidateís specialties and interests.

●Participate in curriculum development.

●Engage in a systematic program of scholarship resulting in conference presentations and publication.

●Advise and direct students accordingly.

●Provide service to department, college, university, and community committees as appropriate.

●Involve Students in Visual Anthropology research projects and field schools when possible

 

Salary Range:

●Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
