FESTIVALS

One World Film Festival

Prague, Czechoslovakia

March 9 - March 13, 2008

DEADLINE DECEMBER 12, 2007

In 2008 the One World Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary. It will take place in Prague March 5th through March 13th and then tour in 23 cities in Czech Republic and 15 cities around the world.

The One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival started in 1999 with the objective of using the power of the film to draw attention to and raise awareness regarding human rights issues. The background of One World organizers was not film but humanitarian and human rights activities carried out by the Czech NGO People in Need.

In the nine years of its existence, the One World festival has become the largest and one of the most important human rights film festivals in Europe. One World features engaged and concerned documentary filmmaking that at the same time demonstrates high artistic qualities. One World presents approximately 120 films from all around the globe and seeks to promote the best quality documentary filmmaking on social and political issues. The principal aim of the One World festival is to use the power of film to heighten public awareness of human rights issues, foster mutual understanding between cultures and peoples, and promote global responsibility. Traditionally, the festival takes place in the first half of March and is held under the auspices of former Czech president Václav Havel as well as the Czech Minister of Culture and Lord Mayor of Prague.

One World has also developed strong educational and outreach programs which continue throughout the year (there are now more than 2200 schools involved in the One World in Schools project, which represents one third of all schools in the Czech Republic). In 2007 One World was awarded UNESCO special mention for its contribution to human rights and peace education, the first film festival ever to receive this prize.
