MULTIMEDIA FOR ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH - for anyone who wants to produce a DVD

Once again Sedona Center for Arts & Technology is presenting a week-long summer workshop on DVD production for researchers, educators, anthropologists, and sociologists. The workshop provides hands-on instruction on methods allowing attendees to work with their own research data to make a completed DVD or a prototype for a future project.

In these days of visual communication, more and more social science researchers are using visual material to present their work. DVD production allows for a vast amount of visual and written data to be present on a simple disk. Viewers can watch visual material on TV or computer, and access research data included on the DVD. This is a great way to present a completed project, develop an advocacy tool, or simply archive your work.

Learn the Production Process that enables social science researchers to archive and present their ethnographic material on multimedia CD or DVD.

The following processes will be covered:

• Production Process – planning and organization of data and its presentation

• Content Analysis – identifying the audience and shaping content solutions.

• Analysis of attendees individual proposed projects

• Choice of Appropriate Technology – Determining the needs of the audience and choosing appropriate medium – CD, DVD, Internet, CD buscard, DVD buscard.

• Mapping out organization and Navigation – flowcharting, storyboarding, prototyping

• Preparation of Resources – Gathering assets and setting standards. Management of research data, organization into a presentation format, menu creation and multimedia design

• Visual and Audio Resources – although a full editing class is outside the scope of this class, some editing of visual and audio content will be covered as it relates to the projects.

• Production – Assembling, coding, programming to create your DVD or a DVD prototype (frequently we take a single segment and complete it as a model for the entire project.

• Finish – Testing, Refining, retesting

• Analysis – Review of what works and how to improve next time.

The course is presented through Yavapai College at Sedona Center for Arts & Technology, Sedona, AZ. The workshop is taught using DVD Studio Pro in our state-of-the-art Mac lab.
